History of Azhari Beach Suite The Azhari Beach Suite was named after a large Indian Ocean trading dhow which was constructed in the early 1930s from Himalayan teak wood. In May 2015, during a storm, M.V. Azhari lost power and ran aground on the reef of Diani Beach, almost directly opposite our property Inshallah. No one died, but all trading goods and the dhow were lost as she broke into pieces being battered over the reef by in and outgoing tides. With considerable time and effort, the old ship, with its beautiful, reclaimed timber beams, was then transformed and crafted into a rich & opulent living space, complimented by a unique interior providing the very genetics of the properties’ authentic and luxurious character. An antique Swahili carved door provides the frame for the central coffee table which displays some of the ship’s original steel bolts and ship’s nails recovered from the dhow’s timber beams. The suite is modern and well designed, yet steeped in history, and fits perfectly with its gorgeous, natural environment. The sandbank on which the M.V. Azhari ran aground is visible on a low tide north of the suite. There are still some remnants of the wreck close to the sandbank and the reef, which makes for an interesting snorkelling trip on a low tide. The Dhows’ maximum carrying capacity was 450 tonnes. M.V. Azhari spent many years trading between the ports of Asia, Qatar, Iran, Dubai, Somalia, Bahrain & Djibouti for most of the 1970s until her unfortunate demise in 2015. This large trading Dhow used to carry bulk amounts of rice, sugar, cooking oil, cement and other trading goods and mostly supplied East African ports using the Indian Ocean seasonal trade winds.
